nachdem die erste Sendung Solino Kaffee praktisch sofort ausverkauft war, haben ich im Moment Probleme die neue Lieferung aus Addis Abeba zu bekommen. Der Kaffee ist produziert und verpackt, wir warten aber noch auf die Exportpapiere.
Da es das erste Mal ist, dass Äthiopien gerösteten Kaffee exportiert (statt grünen Rohkaffee) sind die Beamten etw as überfordert und wollen alles ganz genau kontrollieren was leider Zeit braucht. Ganz konkret geht es um die National Bank Äthiopiens, die den Export genehmigen muss.
Dabei besteht große Angst, dass ein Teil des Geldes welches ich zahle nicht in Äthiopien ankommt sondern auf irgendwelchen schwarzen Auslandskonten des Kaffeerösters eingezahlt wird (weitere Details siehe unten).
Dies ist natürlich auch für mich eine unangenehme Überraschung, deshalb bitte Sie alle gerne hier im Blog dazu zu schreiben und noch etwas auf Ihre Lieferung zu warten. Letzlich ist ja auch dies Teil des Solino Projektes dem Land zu helfen und dafür zu sorgen, dass unnötige Bürokratie abgebaut wird.

Dear Ambassador Kassahun Ayele;In addition to my email from yesterday, I like to give you some more details.
In the excel file I sent you yesterday I made a small update. Currently you can see coffee prices in Germany that range between 3,30 Euro to 16,00 Euro. This depends on the brand, the marketing, the quality and the channel of distribution.
However, in reality I would imagine that 90% of the roasted coffee is sold for 3,50 per 500g in the market.
This means that if we want to be competitive and sell more than few Kilos of coffee the price is an important issue and shall be decided between supplier and client without the influence of the National Bank of Ethiopia.
As you said, the local market in Ethiopia is big and companies are able to do business at the market price for many years without the National Bank influencing the price level.
I do understand your argument that Ethiopia fears black money is generated in the export business. However I believe if Ethiopia wants to start export seriously they will have to accept that not everything can be controlled. All countries that have started their export business (such as Poland for example which started export from zero after they became a free market economy in 1989) never controlled export prices and are now successful.
Finally, I believe if we do not find a fast solution for this project, it might stop before it even started. This would confirm the arguments of companies like Starbucks that it is impossible to roast coffee at the origin. It would certainly also be the worst scenario for the coffee business of Ethiopia in the future.
